Prompting Is Work Design

Prompt engineering is the practice of turning a vague request into a clear work order. A useful prompt tells AI who to act as, what to do, what context is approved, what constraints matter, and what format the output should use.

Weak prompt: "Summarize this."

Stronger prompt: "Act as an operations enablement coach. Summarize the approved shift handoff notes below for a supervisor. Use five bullets: incidents, staffing, blockers, follow-ups, and risks. Do not include names or sensitive details. If information is missing, list questions instead of guessing."

The second prompt is better because it narrows the role, audience, output, and safety boundary.
